Hodgdon H4895 is the most versatile Hodgdon rifle powder. This member of the Extreme Extruded line powder is great for 17 Remington, 250-3000 Savage, 308 Winchester and 458 Winchester, to name just a few. It is amazingly accurate in every cartridge where it is listed in Hodgdon load data. It had its origin in the 30-06 as a military powder and was the first powder Hodgdon sold to the loading public.

The powder is a good all-around powder for quite a few calibers. It can be purchased for here It is used for 223, 308 and 7.62×64… good stuff. This is the go-to powder fors .308 win. Unfortunately, it is hard to find. The chronograph proves it is consistent from bottle to bottle, not unusual to have standard deviation reading below 6.0.

There is something to be said for versatility, and h4895 has it in spades. It shoots fantastically in .308, and was the runner-up accuracy powder in 30/30, 300 Savage, and 250 Savage. It never hurts to keep a bit around as a backup powder, just in case the primary powder gets scarce for a whole or goes out of production. H4895 is rarely the most accurate powder in a cartridge, but it never shoots poorly, either so it’s one of the favorites for midsized rifle cartridges, and a good starter powder for newly acquired rifles.

it Works well in the 22-250 with lighter AND heavier pills. h4895 is still giving great accuracy. 37.2gr and the 28gr Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos bullet is giving 1/2″ groups at 100 yards. PLEASE USE CAUTION with the load data as this is a wildcat cartridge and not much info is available for loads this light.
